Thanks for the info so far. Of the two, I think that the Mark one is preferable. I'm in Salisbury, so it's a far old trip up to see that one in Lincs.
Now to the issue of insurance, as this is a first 'extra' car, I am classed as having no NCD, despite having 20 yrs+ of claim free motoring. I have a company car, Merc E Class, and a Fiat 500 that my wife uses. It is this that has the NCD. any tips on insurance, companies etc?
What is the road tax on a 260, those CO2 figs are eye watering. I know I don't buy a beast like a 260 for its green credentials - I'll plant a tree or something - maybe even 2. I'm near the New Forest so there are loads of trees already, so my conscience is clear, if a little smokey!

    Hi,

    tax for a pre 06 is £260, post 06 more like £400+

Insurancewise, talk to Peter Best Insurance. They offer two policies, a classic policy limited to 5000 milesm with full euro breakdown cover etc, but car needs to be garaged. NCB should not be an issue. The other policy is unlimited miles, no breakdown cover but less parking restrictions, its also cheap!

It's well worth giving them a call 0162 1840010 I believe is the number. Both my 260 and TF are insured with them.

They do a good deal for MG's, Peter Best himself is an ex Chairman oif the MG Car Club, and is still an active club official

Colin, sorry to contradict you, but Peter Best does not insist on the car being garaged on the Classic policy ~ mines kept on the drive.

that must have changed since last July then, and is good to know!!! Could be an option for #242 at renewal time, but the 5000 mile limit ???? May not be enough for me!! Thanks for letting me know Nigel

Well I think the answer to the 5000 mile limit is to buy a second 260 and use one half the time and the other the rest of the time.
Of course if you do more than 10000 miles a year you will need a third 260
This way you'd be able to get your cheap insurance-think how much money you'd be saving

Why don't you transfer the NCD to the MG and start the Fiat 500 off as the newly insured car. When I first bought mine I registered it in the wife's name, I pay £323 with Aviva. I changed from an Admiral Multicar policy last year when they hiked up all their prices, remember loyalty counts for nothing these days with Insurance Companies.
Road Tax on my 04 reg is £260 (may have gone up to £270 now).

PS.... Forget the trees, they are overrated.

When insuring these cars it is important to consider "market value"
With an ordinary type of policy even a minor prang might result in the car being written off, as the "market value " of the car may be a lot less than what you paid for it, or what you may consider your pride and joy to be worth
With a "classic car" policy you agree the value called "agreed value" with the insurer.
Thus a low mileage 9 year old 260 in good condition might have an agreed value of £6/7/8 K but the market value might be £2/3 K or less
    Worth thinking about

Peter Best is coming up as a recommendation time and again, and indeed the RV8 is insured through them. spoke this a.m. and they quoted £218 for a 3k limited mileage...... Quite a bit better than the £1100 quoted by specialist classic insurer Heritage. Adrian Flux were v helpful at £450, and doing the fiat without the NCD at £285.

Going to see the Mark 1 260 tomoorrow. Will report back on my return.

Yus Adrian Flux can be quite good with their specialist insurance. When ringing about a classic lorry they beat Footman James by couple hundred quid, like anything just need to play the ringing round game lol!
