I don't know who Paul is but, I use R222 wax. Goes on very easy and does a great job. Perhaps buy a dual action polisher. The megs one I have has been upgraded now and is great for going the whole car as polishing and waxing can take all day.

AG super resin polish is always a good bet. Has fillers in so covers small scratches to a point.

What colour is the car? If it's dark AG Ultra Deep Shine will produce a deep shine. Apply using a damp sponge and it doesn't produce too much dust.

I have been using this brand for several years and always had a good result and is very easy to work with!.:-)
As the car is old I'd use light rubbing(by hand), then polish and last but not least the wax.
I use a eccentric grinder with a medium hard foam pad when I polish my car and am pleased
    with the result.

Don't know if you have this brand in England though.
