Default Effects of overdue oil change

hi, I would welcome informed opinion on a 260 I viewed this weekend. The car was in good condition and well looked after by the current owner but I noticed in the previous service history that it had its second service and oil change at 13,200 but was not then serviced/oil change until 28,700, a gap of 15,500 miles over 15 months. I know from this site that oil changes should be at 5000 miles, do you think there would be any adverse effect on the engine to go this distance before oil change.

    Thanks John

I'd say a lot would depend on the type of driving and if the oil level was checked regularly - but I am sure others more knowledgeable than I will have more to say on the matter

From posts gone by, Ford would only provide a warrenty on the engine if it had an oil change every 5000 miles, which is the official line.

However, as most cars now only have an annual or 15,000 mile schedule, it's a bit of a misnomer.

Personally, I use Vauxhall long life oil and change it every 5000 miles.

I change mine regularly but not 5000 mls on the dot.
    Sometimes it's more to 7000.

Given that the engine has been around since they've invented fire, the oil has come a long way since then.

Still think 15k or 1 year+ is pushing it a bit.

Probably the answer would be to go by the book but would be good to know what would be a realistic interval

If everything else stacks up I wouldnt let it be a showstopper, at 5000 miles the oil is coming out as clean as it went in

Hi, thanks for all your comments re the extended oil change. I have now bought the car subject to handing over the money and agreeing a collection date with the current owner once the cherised plate is transferred.

Dave, in answer to your question re what one its 187, a members car on this site. It was after hearing your V8 when I came to test drive your ZTT 190 back in Feb that I got the bug. As a result of driving your ZTT I have ended up with a very low mileage 75 diesel tourer and a 260 to add to my MGF Abingdon VVC, as you may have guessed I am a Rover/MG fan.

I look forward to joining the club proper once I have got the 260 in my paws. Regards John
