    Default Road tax

Can anyone tell me exactly when the tax goes up on a 260, I was told that all 04 cars are at the lower rate and anything newer goes up to the 400+ qid rate.
I phoned dvla and they said it doesn't matter what age, they are all the top rate, when I mentioned that I thought it was a pain in the ar~+ the dvla woman said ' Well perhaps you shouldn't go wasting your money on gas guzzling polluters then!' ??!!!

I thought it was 2006 (and newer registered) cars that were more expensive

Well ring the woman at the DVLA back and tell her to learn her job before criticising you! ZT 260's are in the higher band for road tax, however the extortionate £435 rate only applies to vehicles registered after 23rd March 2006. Your 2004 car should be at £235, even though the CO g/km emmissions are exactly the same!

Cheers for that, it is important as it opens up availability, I've only looked at 04's so far, When I buy I will ask the rate the seller is paying just to confirm!

Was it the case that those before march 2006 that were over 225 g/km were *temporarily* in band K? I asked this on Parkers but didn't really get an answer.

Mines 04, and i think if my tax ran out in May rather then April (as it currently does) id be paying more, but not sure how much more.

Twice i've taxed it, and the post office clerk looks at the date/cost and comments "Oooo your lucky!"

What the post office clerk is probably referring to is that you just miss the annual tax rise (Band K was £215 up to April 2010, then £245 from May 2010 onwards). It's not related to the year of your car (04).

The only thing that makes a difference to which Band you're in is whether the car was registered before 23 March 2006:
    • Band K (201-225g/km) - for 2009 & 2010 includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006: £245
    • Band M (Over 255g/km): £435

There is no official statement on what will happen in 2011, but clearly one possibility is that all 260s will be taxed as Band M, regardless of registration date.
