    Default Hi Newbie saying....erm...hi.....

Firstly hello all, I'm the happy owner of a Rover 260 and I'm loving the lazy drive the old girl has to offer. It's just magic.
Sadly, having only had her for a few months I have a check engine amber light on and a slippy gearbox (wether the two are related is the question) I'm based near Basingstoke and was hoping someone could recommend someone who could help. I've tried a guy in Cobham who didn't really want to know when I mentioned a gearbox issue. Also is there a code reader on the market for our cars as it could just need reading and clearing.
Hope to meet a few of you this year at any meets planned.

    cheers
    Jez

There was a bit of chat about code readers a few days ago in this thread:

Assume you've checked the auto-box fluid-level and colour, Jez? Mark you, you shouldn't see any drop in level unless something else has happened. Should still be nice Mercon-V red, not brown.
... oh yes, sorry; welcome on board from Holland!

    Hi David.
first thing I did when I bought the car was take it to a garage I use for some of my other stuff for a full service, and as the gearbox was feeling a little tardy, a gearbox oil change. The oil they used was Motol Multi ATF (Dextron 3+) which was recommended as an alternative to the Mercon V. Within 500 miles the gearbox has an intermittent slip (once every couple of days) bad enough that I've stopped driving it and coincident with the check engine light. Wether this is because of the oil I don't know but the garage owner(who I trust) says the Motol rep insists it's compatible and it certainly lists Merton V on the compatibility sheet.
Cant find out much about the gearbox type or wether taking it to a Mustang specialist would be better as no one seems to be able to recommend anyone capable of working on the Rover 260 with the auto box.

mmmmmh. I would certainly suspect the fluid you used. How did they change it? Drop the pan as they should? How many litres did they charge you for?
The box takes 12l. from dry, max 8l wet (but normally you are lucky to get more than 6 or 7 out). Mercon-V really is the oil to use. That means a lot of Mercon-V has been retained, mostly in the torque convertor, and mixed with your stuff.

Rather than look for a Mustang specialist for your Rover 75 V8, why not go to a Rover 75 V8 /ZT-260 specialist; seems logical to me?

P.S. I did recommend a specialist very able to work on the R75V8 in a PM to you. Take a look?
