Hi David.
first thing I did when I bought the car was take it to a garage I use for some of my other stuff for a full service, and as the gearbox was feeling a little tardy, a gearbox oil change. The oil they used was Motol Multi ATF (Dextron 3+) which was recommended as an alternative to the Mercon V. Within 500 miles the gearbox has an intermittent slip (once every couple of days) bad enough that I've stopped driving it and coincident with the check engine light. Wether this is because of the oil I don't know but the garage owner(who I trust) says the Motol rep insists it's compatible and it certainly lists Merton V on the compatibility sheet.
Cant find out much about the gearbox type or wether taking it to a Mustang specialist would be better as no one seems to be able to recommend anyone capable of working on the Rover 260 with the auto box.
