Maybe better to pull the plug of the compressor, de-tension the belt and see if the pulley spins smoothly and silently by hand. It should.Originally Posted by colintf

Either make sure ECON is displayed on the heater control or better still just switch it off

(edit...) if it doesn't, then the clutch unit of the pulley is probably trashed. If it is "graunchy" or stiff then the clutch or bearing are AWOL or about to become so.
