I have being using Nokian WRA3 Winter tyres which are excellent. Chains in my opinion are an absolute pain, damage alloys and body work. The Nokians were allowing me to drive past very expensive 4x4's fitted with normal road tyres, which could not attempt the hills I was going up with ease. Nokian are a Finnish tyre company with a great reputation. Snow socks are also good if you are going through deep snow, just to get you going. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I have used chains where winter tires gave up.
Chains are for use in thick snow.

    My advice:
    Winter tires on Compact snow
    Chains on thick snow
    Studded tires on ice.

1/2 inch studs for racing on ice.

    Andy,

According to my local tyre fit shop, snow chains are illegal in the U.K.

Snowchains are perfectly legal to use on UK roads as long as the tarmac surface has a protective covering of snow/ice. You are not allowed to use snowchains on cleared roads with exposed tarmac.
