SMC have occasionally had them on their eBay shop.

I believe Bilstein can refurb the existing ones if you have the time.

I will give him a call, I would have thought and hoped there were cheaper options than the £300 each at Rimmer Bros. not sure if someone makes an alternative damper

Yes £300 seems a bit much. You can get 4 new shocks AND springs in the form of the VHS lowering kit for £1100+vat, and that includes a few other parts that are worth replacing too: http://www.vehiclehandlingsolutions.com/road_cars.htm

The only problem I can see is that the wheels need aligning after fitting, but I think this is the route I will go down even though I don't particularly feel the need for 15mm less ride height. Mine has done 70k so would benefit from a refresh I think

Reply from VHS:
Andy,
I'm sorry but the suspension upgrade kit is sold out. We invested in a small
batch of parts and it is not
cost effective for us to get another. The
springs were the same rate, but achieved a lower ride height. What I can say
is that the dampers fitted to 260 are fully serviceable. This means that we
could arrange a rebuild with the VHS damper settings. However, the ride
height would be unchanged. We still have some uprated diff dampers to
minimize axle tramp.
Best regards,
Andy
