Isn't that what Brian is saying Herman? The starter motor is the same , it's just the bolt on solenoid that's in a different place.

Problaby read unique too literally Makes you wonder why MG would change the location of the solenoid?

MG/Rover did the same on the RV8. Moved the solenoid thro' 90 degrees

Incidentally I would try connecting jump leads or a jump starter direct to the starter terminal, bypassing the solenoid
If this turns the starter then it is your solenoid that is at fault
A good auto-leckie will be able to supply parts for this

Part has arrived, will take it to the garage tomorrow. Fingers crossed that soon the roads of Anglesey will resound once again to a V8 roar...

Thanks for the idea of trying to sort the solenoid - as it happens, the car is under warranty so I might as well just change the whole starter motor.

Did you have to convert the new motor with the mountings from the old unit ?

Andy, thanks for the pointer - am away from home this week but will do the form at the weekend.
Ha ha. But strictly speaking your record is still unbroken. This fault also didn't stop it going, it just stopped it starting!
Rover, - the thinking mans car!
