From a trader's point of view certainly a bargaining point at P/X but when put on the forecourt for sale all of a sudden Cat-D is 'a minor accident that doesn't even appear on the V5'

Very true. I remember I bought a 3 year old Citroen BX TD estate and was tempted to px for the Xantia when it came out. The salesman who sold me the car 6 month earlier went around the car and pointed out some minor defects. I told him that was very strange as he'd not pointed them out when I'd bought the car from him earlier. Result was I walked away and kept the BX for 11 years

@jenksman re: the not trying bit. The car has now been advertised in Germany, Holland, France and Sweden. I prefer two in the hand over two in the bush, :-). Thanks for all the comments on here.

I think you misunderstood my comment
I said you cannot be criticised for not trying
This means you have tried very hard

Ihad got it right the first time, was just not clever enough in replying. Anyway, it's back on again, and apparently Germany seems to be a good market. Let's see.

RE the CAT D status, i dont get involved in buying or selling CAT reg drama cars, as they are exactly that and as there are so many proper cars out here to buy, why bother. people who buy cat repaired cars generally do so as they cant afford a proper one

however in 15 yrs in the trade i have come across the odd 1 or 2 in PX (sometimes where the owner didnt know ! it was cat reg) and whenever i have traded or sold them at auction they have made around 65-70% or pre accident money. so thats why i said about my thoughts on value. if they were only 10% less you wouldnt bother !!

the only way you can buy or sell one with confidence is to have accident damage photos and report then and there, as the advert states rear bumper and wing damage, but how does anyone know or believe that without evidence or if there was floorpan / roof damage, which is highly likely. just look on ebay and there are lots of private CAT reg adverts saying "mint condition" "as good as new" "repaired to main dealer std", most of them will be sub standard as i have seen many of these cat cars to value in PX and decline most of them as they are normally poor std and have hidden dramas or faults and i would rather walk away from trouble

generally most cars repaired after cat C or D status start off being repaired properly, then repair costs spiral and people cut corners and 90% of cat repaired cars never get finished properly and always have those bodywork / electrical / mechanical issues

this is info from experienced professional bodyshops where they get people coming in for repairs to cat cars not repaired correctly

IMO - i would start it at £4000 and see how it runs or list as £5500 classified price with also an "offer" option button

I think you've missed the fact that the guy whose bid shows at £5,651 almost certainly bid more than that. £5,651 shows because it's one bid increment above the next highest bidder's maximum bid.

There's a big difference between 'rarer' and 'more desirable'. Yes, the grille is a huge improvement over the normal bland 75 grille and possibly better looking than the Mk.II MG grille but it isn't a patch on the Mk.I MG grille and, personally, I would never go for the automatic gearbox version - which almost all Rovers are and almost no MGs are.

There a couple of mg autos
The autos I think are probably quicker on the move because they don't suffer from the agricultural manual gear change

Have a look here http://rover75.bplaced.net/v8.html under 'Performance'

Assuming they use the same box:-

It looks like 0-62 and top speed are not the same as the ZT 260 with the ZT performing slightly better.
Can't find any figures on 'in gear' accellaration but potentially this is where the autobox comes into its own.
I'll see if I can dig some info out or maybe others have it at hand and can post
