Default Auto box oil Mercon V

My insulating cover around the gearbox, drips oil, and the gearbox is on the low side.

I cannot see where the oil comes from, it does not look like there is a leak from the bellhousing so maybe not the shaft seal.?

But to get the recommended oil, Mercon V, seems almost impossible. I have found a Caltex that says Dexron and Mercon compatible, but at astronomical cost.

Went to a local Ford Dealer. They said they drain all autoboxes and fill with William Pynns(?) which clearly states Dexron II.

So, what is one to do, and any fav. spot from where oil might go AWOL?

Thanks for the answer. Mine is the Autobox, and the oil, MerconV, is not mentioned. If you use the vehicle locator on the site, it comes up with all the recommendations except for the auto box.
One of the oils include friction modifiers, the other not.

I think it is time that we have some expert tell us that what we put in does not have to be exactly what the factory requires. This is becoming ridiculous.

I think he might have a point.

If you look at the specs that is listed with the oils on the Opie site you'll find that most, if not all, list either Mercon or Dexron as comparable spec.

MerconV is not a brand but a spec. and most of the oils listed meet that spec.

Yes, I know it is a spec, like Dextron etc.
However, I have seen somewhere that the one oil is for brake bands and clutches, that require friction modifiers, and the other type is one for clutches and bands that does not require such. Which, as it stands, would make it impossible for the oils to be interchangeable.

I am getting to the viewpoint that all this is a sophisticated attempt to snare some money extra out of my pockets, and now I am determined to find out what is going on.

That Fords own branches here seem to disregards the requirement for Mercon oil in their own products, makes me wonder what is actually going on.

Kaiser..what the Fuchs are you on about !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try Fuchs Lubricants South Africa..they really know their stuff/ and have a super range of Oils.
They list a WM PENN ATF ( which is the only reason I looked this up..as I have never heard of it ! )
Also. Castrol South Africa..list Mercon V etc !
Always better to contact the Lubricant manufacturers technical depts..direct..than ask commercial " Oil shops " ..who very often have have no technical credentials.
    ..and ..yes..I must be b bored this morning to discuss a bloke in S A 's G/B requirements !!!!!!!!!
    Regards Harry
