Default Smashed rear windscreen covered by insurance

Yesterday Id finished work and got in my car to see the rear windscreen had been smashed... Ive checked CCTV and nothing. very odd!

Anyway Ive logged it with the police and got a crime reference number etc and also with my insurance company who have said as yet they havnt been able to source a replacement.

If they cant get one would they write the car off?

    Hi Christian
You need to be very careful here
I believe rear windscreens are no longer available and this might give your insurers a reason to write off the car
Maybe there are others on the forum who know of a source of rear windscreens?
I would suggest you check out local scrapyards to see if you can get one. You may have to get a specialist to remove it, at your risk.
I know your car has an LPG conversion which is a costly add-on. Is your insurance based on "agreed value". If not the insurers might offer you a derisory amount for the car
You might be able to get a settlement from them and then buy the car back from them and repair yourself, providing of course you can get a windscreen.it might even be better to forget about making a claim
Drawing from the experience of others you need to move fast. Where is the car, do you still have it or have the insurers taken it away? I would suggest you keep track of it before it disappears
    Best of luck
    Dave

On the Gentlemen's Site Seancar will get you one http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=123838 I know that he sells all his rear glass to a windscreen replacement company.

Cannot believe it will be written off over a back screen but stranger things have happened.

Thanks Dave it is still with me I've parked it up at work out of the way under cover. Ill wait to see what they say, they are still looking for a replacement as I say. Ill ring around a few scrap yards and check Dominic's link.

    Hi Christian
The way my local scrap yard works is as follows
Assuming they have a doner car
They put you in touch with a glass fitter
He removes the windscreen and installs it in your car. Price to be agreed
Asking price for windscreen by scrapyard £100 + VAT
I'm not sure what happens if fitter breaks the glass when taking it out but the scrapyard says this is rare
My local scrapyard in Swansea is too far away for you but I would notbe surprised if other scrapyards have the same system

That's good then. And I don't know if you're on a classic car policy with Peter Best like a lot of us but they used to have no excess on the windows and I believe they probably still do.

Some years ago I had a rear screen shatter on my SD1 for no apparent reason while I was driving along.
