    Default Steering rack 'weeping'

    Hi all,

I have had a very small oil 'weep' from one side of the steering rack for a while. I removed the 'cable tie' and moved the gaiter back but found no real amount of oil inside. Should it be filled totally and if so can it be topped up?

The gaiter is in good order but I think it just needs a better cable tie on it?

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

    Peter

There should be no oil behind the gaiter the oil is inside the rack and is leaking out.

.........Hmmm, so the gaiter is just stopping dirt entering the mechanism then? When I slide back the gaiter all is clean and slightly oiled but no quantity of oil to 'run out'. The gaiter at the off side showing no weeping at all. I presume using 'cable ties' is the norm these days but have always been concerned that the one 'weeping' has not been tight enough as it did slide with the gaiter.

    Are the cable ties special?
    or
Do I need to fit new rack?

    ........MOT due soon!

    Thanks

    Just a good quality tie.

Try the Leak stopper first. It worked on mine, over 3 years now.

Worst case the gaiters can be changed without changing the rack - done one on mine (or at least Nick at Austins did)
Colin Ellis #456 It'll be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end
