Default Hello - new member thinking of buying?............

    http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3731623.htm

Greetings one and all. New member asking for your help. Am interested in a purchase and have seen this on piston heads. Thinking of going to have a look at this, but I am three hours away from it. What do I need to be looking out for or at least ask in advance.

I have sent an emai lot the owner, and received this info

"Hi ,as the ad states the book has 9 service stamps,i have a couple of bills showing replacement rear discs, fuel pump etc! Car was sold as a demonstrator ,bought by a lady director who owned for around 3 to 4 years, sold to the guy i bought it from who owned it for around 3 years using only as a Sunday car. It is an honest car with no problems. I have had all oils changed as the ad says.
I bought it last July however since i MOTd it in November i have done around 500 miles,it's just not being used.Happy to sell and happy to keep, which ever? I will carcoon it and keep as investment if i don't sell.''

I have seen another on eBay at a small 2nd hand dealer about 30 miles away http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-04-MG...#ht_1911wt_984

Is there are a preference btwn Mk 1 and Mk 2. I have heard that a Mk 1 is better as less affected by project drive. Comments welcome.

My father and I already have an RV8 which we've had for around 4 years and love it. A ZT would go well with it. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Ric

    Hi Ric,
The Mk1 has no traction control and only 217 where made, if the vin number is above 018/019 then its a production model (dont quote me but i think its close). The Mk2 does have traction control which gives you the option Off/Ditch/On. I think both of the 260s are known so someone will be along to give you some more info on them soon.

Either one will make you grin every time you drive it.

    Regards

    Nigel

Three hours away in which direction? If it is from the south then you are welcome to look at mine en route( I am just off the A1 near Huntingdon) if you want to use it as a benchmark against the car(s) you are thinking of buying. Just send me a PM.

I have an RV8 too as well as the 260...no prizes for guessing which one has done more miles since Christmas...

Pistonheads one is #097 according to the ad, so definitely affected by project Drive.
Personally I prefer the looks of the MKI (and the fact that there are less made than the MKII) but others have an equal liking for the MKII (personal preference I guess)

Traction control is something you can definitely do without unless you want to get stuck on a junction trying to pull a fast one

The one on ebay is from a member called DerangedRover, see here:-
    https://www.two-sixties.co.uk/mgoc26...E-for-sale-379

#097 is owned by Tractorpete, a member on here, and up for sale since end of last year. I'll see if I can dig out some posts.

You can always try to send them a PM

    Hi

    Welcome aboard

In terms of what to look for there is little V8 specific stuff to be honest

You've mentioned rear discs - they are pricy though the club shop can help there (that's the plug for the shop out of the way)
Drive train clunk is normal so a tough one to call but check it's not excessive
Look for uneven tyre wear - though some scrubbing of the tyres can be expected if lot of full lock is used

    Common to other MG ZT's
Ensure the orange fuel filter clip has been added
Look for signs of water ingress - damp carpets, damp boot
    Drivers seat wear

If you test drive it and see the oil light and or battery light flash on - ignore it - they all do that

Where abouts in the country are you - sure owners local to you will be happy to give you a look around theirs to give you more points of reference

    Good luck

    Cheers
    Colin

    Hi and welcome.

    Whereabouts are you?

Of the 2, I personally prefer the first one.

    Good Luck with your hunt

Thanks for the info so far. Of the two, I think that the Mark one is preferable. I'm in Salisbury, so it's a far old trip up to see that one in Lincs.
Now to the issue of insurance, as this is a first 'extra' car, I am classed as having no NCD, despite having 20 yrs+ of claim free motoring. I have a company car, Merc E Class, and a Fiat 500 that my wife uses. It is this that has the NCD. any tips on insurance, companies etc?
What is the road tax on a 260, those CO2 figs are eye watering. I know I don't buy a beast like a 260 for its green credentials - I'll plant a tree or something - maybe even 2. I'm near the New Forest so there are loads of trees already, so my conscience is clear, if a little smokey!

    Hi,

    tax for a pre 06 is £260, post 06 more like £400+

Insurancewise, talk to Peter Best Insurance. They offer two policies, a classic policy limited to 5000 milesm with full euro breakdown cover etc, but car needs to be garaged. NCB should not be an issue. The other policy is unlimited miles, no breakdown cover but less parking restrictions, its also cheap!

It's well worth giving them a call 0162 1840010 I believe is the number. Both my 260 and TF are insured with them.

They do a good deal for MG's, Peter Best himself is an ex Chairman oif the MG Car Club, and is still an active club official
