    Default oil of the Differential

    Hello,

I just got my ZZT 260 from Holland, and I discovered, that the differential is sweating. Probably it's the front oil-seal. Is this a common thing to happen? What oil do you use to fill it up? Till where? Do I have to poor it into the long neck which sticks out on the right hand side? How is it possible to undo the plug?

I haven't done mine yet, someone will come on and help.

    Rear Differential
There are only three oils available in the UK that have full sign-off for the unit. These are:-
    Mobil SHC80W140 id
    Castrol SAF-XJ 80W-140
    Morris Lubricants Lodexol XFS 80W-140.

    Capacity 1.6l

There are two manuals you can get to help. A Rover75/ZT one, and a Mustang one, for the engine.
(The diff is not in either)

Oil I use is Castrol SAF-XJ (I think they may have just re-named it, but Google it...). Get 2 x 1 litre bottles to make the job easier to squeeze it in.

The filler plug is the large silver bolt facing you on the back of the diff. The metal subframe is shaped so that you can just about get a thin-walled socket on. I used an old box spanner. Remove and fill up to level with bottom of the hole.

If you don't know when the oil was last changed, you may as well drain it (remove the smalll bolt on the bottom of the diff casing) and re-fill with new, as the factory "running oil" is supposed to be changed from new.

Not (yet) had any issues with leaks myself, but now and again it gets mentioned. Good luck.

I think SAF-XJ is now called Syntrax and is not available in 80W-140, but in 75W-140.

Filling up is done through the plug at the back of the differential - 29mm socket needed
(not sure what you mean with the long neck though, surely not the dip-stick tube as that is in the engine compartment)
Access is challenging but there is a recess in the rear subframe to accommodate.
Might have to jack up the diff a bit.

Filling is 1.6 liters or until the oil come out of the filler opening (car on a level surface).
Draining is best done after a long run

PM me if you want a run down of the procedure in Dutch

I don't know why, but the title of this thread reminded me of the Arabian Knights cartoon that used to be on as part of Banana Splits when I was a kid...

When I saw "oil of the differential", I just thought of "size of an elephant" - Bez, the knight who could shape-shift to become different animals. Yes, I'm sad...
