Insurance - alarm troubles

Hi guys,

I thought i would say something about getting insured as a younger driver as i had some real trouble. Unfortuniately Peter Best only insure drivers over 25 and its the same story with all the specialist insurers. I went with Privilege as they were fairly reasonabe (relatively speaking) but had a nightmare trying to prove the 260 had a thatcham cat 1 alarm.

For some reason they want a certificate to prove what alarm system is installed even though its factory fitted. I had a hunt around on google and found plenty of other people had gone through the same hassle, without much success as such a certificate doesnt seem to exist for the 260. Anyway after several letters and phone calls i managed to sort everything out with a letter from the original dealer (now an audi dealer) confirming the alarm was thatcham cat 1, they were happy to do this for me. Privilege seemed happy with it and im all insured now. Hopefully this info is helpful for anyone else in a similar situation, aren't insurance companys fun..... lol.

how old are you? i didn't have any trouble insuring the car from the age of 23, try marker study insurance, who specialize in high performance cars.

Yes echoing what Peter said (funnily enough i got my 260 at 23) ive beenw ith Elephant and Bell and havn't had any problems with stating a standard factory fit alarm :)

I'm 23 as well! Thanks for your suggestions. I don't suppose anyone can tell me what the make and model of the alarm fitted to the 260 actually is?

This sounds strangly familiar! I was with Privilige for ages, and when I got the 260, they tried the same one on me. I even quoted the ABI code for the car, and dug out the original certificate number of the alarm from the manufactures (as in Rover/MG). They still wanted a certificate from the manufacturer though, who obviously no longer existed. They ended up saying that I was only insured for Third Party Only (not even covered for theft therefore). I ended up telling them to do one, and went to PB.

Privilige are lacking somewhat in common sense, and basic investigative abilities, and I would knock them on the head without a further thought.

23 and was with admiral/elephant/bell etc until my recent swap to peter best. Never had an issue with the alarm. Noticed on several insurance sites that the 260 had its own choice under something like 'Rover 260 alarm system' or something like that.

Some companies want trackers fitted some don't, yes its a real mine field, glad youre sorted ,anyway if someone did steal it they would soon abandon it once they see how fast the fuel gauge goes down :)

Spoke too soon, they are still bugging me about letters confirming this that and the other even though i've already given them exactly what they asked for and assured me would satisfy them. I'm having one last stab at keeping them happy and then giving up and moving insuance company.

I will have to hope Geoff11 is right about tight pocketed theives for now lol.

My best quote by far was with LV Insurance, BUT... they wanted a tracked fitted. So the £150 I'd save on the premium, I'd be spending on a tracker subscription instead :(

It got me thinking though - do many 260s get stolen? I haven't seen any talk of it on the forum and I can't imagine it's that high up the wanted list of the local chavs. So I can't see that a tracker would be that useful...

I doubt it. I guess they are too big to slip between the bollards to playing fields when the cops are on their tails :)

Im insured with privilege and was simply asked does it have an alarm? Quoted MG/Rover fitted. When my ZTT190 was stolen off the drive (never recovered) they paid up like a goodun.:)

Horray! Got a letter today confirming i've given sufficiant evidence that the alarm is thatcham cat 1. They wanted make, model, reg, alarm make, alarm model, thatcham approval number, dealership confirmation of alarm fitting (factory fit!) all comfirmed on headed paper from the original dealer.... sorted :P

I have just received my renewal from privilege and they are now stating car is not insured for theft or attempted theft unless i can prove That a thatcham 1 alarm is fitted. The fact the has a paid up tracker fitted does not count? They want proof from my gargage that a thatcham 1 alarm has been fitted. What a bunch of tossers:o take your money then tell you. I have a month to resolve reinsure with someone else.:mad: I think it may well be with someone else

Had the same problem got it tested and certified at the Lucas center in Redditch £45 so no probs now lets hope you can get it sorted if you need the number of the place I used let me know, Good luck.

Hi Martin thanks for the info my office is in Redditch so that may work well can you pm me the details please. The garage that service my car have offered to print me off a letter for the insurance company and I will include copy of the list provided by Vmax and Ajay. If not accepted I will be back:fight2

Sorted letter from garage sent to insurance now have letter back from insurance stating all in order simples!! still a pain in the ass though.:D

Had the same probs many moons ago. Had tracker fitted which monitors the car and never worked got a refund for that one £400 to fit and £150 a year to do nothing. Was told when tracker tested it if the car was parked next to trees or near houses it would not pick it up handy!

One other company asked me for proof of cat 1 i was lucky just rang them up and asked them did they abide by the ABI code of pracrice? which they will say yes to and then just tell them the car is listed with them as having a cat 1 alarm immob.

I just got a GSM tracker/imobiliser and works very well. I can do live tracking it texts me when the car has been opened or moved i can even cut the engine with a text command handy when you are behind the thiving sods!
