Hi,
Please be gentle - I'm new here! The starter motor has gone (it's not the battery, honest!) but neither my local garage nor Graham Walkers in Chester can source a replacement. I think I've found what I need, but three questions please: could somebody confirm the part number for the starter motor for a ZT260, roughly how much should it cost, and are there any dealers/suppliers out there who I should avoid?

Hi Charlie and welcome.
Personally my first port of call would be Scooter (Brian from Dreadnought Garage) on here or AE Wilcox (my local MG Dealer and they know their 260's well)

and I found 46 of them in Holland!

323, assuming I'm reading the right bit off the plate. Had it for 6 years, this is the first time it's let me down (there have been other faults, but none which stopped it going!). There's a pic of it in my album if you're interested (more to follow shortly). Thanks again!

No you were right (colour and owner), although the V5 says he is (was) in Poole rather than Bournemouth. I bought it exactly 6 years ago from SMC - not sure how long they had had it.Quote:

Simply that turning the key created nothing but a high-pitched whine - no attempt to turn the engine. One of my friends who knows much more about cars than me came and had a look and agreed with what I thought; he tried coaxing it into life with a few judicious taps but it wasn't having it! I got it tow-started and took it to my local garage who confirmed the problem, but couldn't source a part, so then I tried Graham Walker with the same result; I had to bring it home because the garage weren't keen to have it with no prospect of fixing it. The fault occurred just after Christmas so I ran it several times a week (self bump-start down a gentle hill!) but when the snow came I couldn't run it...and now the battery is dead as well. Oh well...fortunately I have half a Citroen as well to commute in so I can still get around, but thanks to all the help on here at least I can progress fixing the proper car!Quote:

6 years and you are still blue Charlie. :) much more to view from the green side.
Fully recharge the battery and try again, I wonder if full load may push the cog down the shaft.
The starter is unique to the ZT260,it has its solenoid in a different place from the normal Ford 4.6 unit. The difference is in the end castings you can change them over from your old unit and fit them to the new standard Ford unit.

Isn't that what Brian is saying Herman? The starter motor is the same , it's just the bolt on solenoid that's in a different place.

Part has arrived, will take it to the garage tomorrow. Fingers crossed that soon the roads of Anglesey will resound once again to a V8 roar...
Thanks for the idea of trying to sort the solenoid - as it happens, the car is under warranty so I might as well just change the whole starter motor.
All sorted - car now back to normal. Many thanks to all on here who have helped me - made a massive difference!
Did you have to convert the new motor with the mountings from the old unit ?
