Hello all,

Firstly i apologise if this post is in the wrong place or considered inapropriate.

I self employed motor trader but i am also a keen car enthusiast so i thought i would do a little research about a car i have aquired and also possibly find it a new home.

The car is a march 04 MG 260 SE in X power grey, it is a one private owner car (not demo + 1, one owner, V5 shows no of former keepers none) the owner bought it new and he is now 82 so swapped it yesterday for something a little more sensible and comforatable, it has covered 39k with full supplying dealer history. It has all the usual SE options and is in very very good condition as its been cherished from new, the only thing i could find fault with is some wear on the drivers seat bolster from getting in and out. It is a pre faclift model and the vin ends 000044 so i am assuming this makes it car no 44. Although i know the supplying dealer and have known and yearned after this car from new, now i have it i have the dilema of what to do with it, even though i consider it to be as safe as money in the bank for the future i cant really justify keeping it as i already have to many older cars/projects and to be honest its still a bit modern to really get me going, i see/drive and deal in too many modern cars to be excited by them, i like cars that were around when i was a child.

I am a motor trader, and trader meaning trade, i have no premisies and do not deal direct with the public, i sell to retail dealers but on occasion when i come across something a bit different i like to educate myself a bit about them and on this occasion thought my research may lead me to a genuine enthusiastic new owner that would appreciate the car rather than me just move it on into the trade, therefore although i would still want to sell the car on trade terms ie no warranty this would be an opportunity for someone to cut out the retail middle man and get themselves a nice original honest car with a good pedigree that has never been offered for sale before or possibly known to the 260 scene.

As i said i am in the trade so i have a fair idea of what the car is worth, i also know that these cars make what they are worth not what any guide books say they are worth, even in the trade if yiu try to buy one using any kind of guide you will not be buying one.

If anyone can tell me anymore about the car including its vin number spec, what they think its worth, or if anyone is looking for one and think they may be interested please let me know.

Regards
Paul.

Good man 82!!!

In terms of value, it's a tough one, we'd all like to say 12k but in reality, one owner, early VIN, low mileage - perhaps £8 to £10K to a collector

Thanks for your input, i was thinking a specialist would put it up for £8K but i suppose it depends how optomistic/greedy they are, i cant make my mind up what to do with it, ive known it from new and i know if i just sell it i may regret it one day as i dont think i`l ever have another one never mind one with this history, i would imagine prices have just about bottomed out now so a decent one should be fairly depreciation free and may even rise in value in the future, im in no rush so we`l see. In the meantime if there is anyone seriously looking for a car like this feel free to pm me.

Cheers.

Used it today and whilst i think its a pretty awsome driving/sounding thing ive got mixed feelings as i think it would be a shame to use it on a daily basis, at the moment its quite a special umollested/pampered car thats led a sheltered life, if i used it how long would it be before it just turned into an average example.

It's quite similar to the one that a trader sold on PH recently (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1813514.htm) - here's the thread on this forum (https://www.two-sixties.co.uk/mgoc260/html/f0rum/showthread.php?t=6460). That was an Mk1 SE model, VIN #035 that was up for £5,995.

That was priced to sell though (you don't sound so sure you want to sell it ;))

For £8K, people will be looking for something a bit newer like this one (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1936648.htm).

If and when i did decide 100% i would not need anywhere near £8K for it, i can say with confidence it would be competively priced, i think its got more to do with having known the car from day one thats keeps making me think i should stash it away somewhere for the future.

You mention people may be looking for something a bit newer, ive usually found as cars get older and start to get a classic/cult status you usually find enthusiasts tend to get more excited about the earlier examples of the marque, purest of the model so to speak, ive already noticed a difference of opinion on the net regarding the version to have.

Thanks for all the input and keep it coming im keen to know as much as i can about these Q cars.

Cheers

Id be tempted to keep it. Wouldn't worry about it being a daily driver, the only thing you'll need to keep on top of it stone chips and minding the kerbs. The running gear of the car shouldn't give any greif using it all the time.

Mines my daily driver (only car) and glad i moved from my ZT V6 to this, wouldn't dream of going back :)

Hi Paul

Do you have any pics that you can post on here (or email) ?

Being a trader I guess you're used to taking pics for Autotrader or whatever ?

Ive had a few cars Ive regretted parting with and the V8 would be one of them. ( in fact its not happening !!)
If you have the facilities why not stash it for a year or two and see how you feel then. It isnt going to lose you any money

The SE spec I would say is sought after, grey silver and black are the common colours, unusual colours can get a premium. I happen to like the Mk1 front but the Mk2 back. I will be upgrading the mesh to the better quality Mk1 type when I get time.
My daily drive for the last 3 years and I'm just weighing up the possibility of weekday diesel driver and the 260 for w/ends to keep the miles down.
I'm in B'ham and commute between Great Barr and Tyseley if you ever need a second opinion.....

pbeach, as a classic enthusiast I know what you're saying re. older versions, but I think these cars are too young for that to be a consideration so I do think at the moment people are generally buying them to use and experience, rather than as future investment, and generally the mk2 is considered the better resolved and better looking version, though it pains me to say that as a mk1 owner!

However, I do agree the tables may turn over the decades when they are sought after rare classics, but it will take a little time in my view. Also, they were manufactured over such a relatively short time period I dont think age relative to each other would be a likely factor, more rarity. And correct me if I'm wrong people, but the mk1 is the rarer by some margin? About 3 to 1 Mk2 vs Mk1?

Probably the rarest collectable is the Rover (non MG) versions.

I probably cant comment on value as I got mine pretty cheap though it is high mileage. What would I personally pay for a car of your description if I was looking again? well that depends on seeing how pristine it is with my own eyes and if it was clearly head and shoulders above others with detailed and full history etc etc, I may pay £7-8k at present, but otherwise I would think £6-7k. FYI, mine was under 5k from a small private trader similar to yourself, although he tended to get cars from the trade and sell them on as he had an association with certain dealers. My car was traded in at a BMW dealer who moved the car straight on to this guy probably for negligible profit, he enjoyed it for a couple of weeks, then shifted it on to me at a very reasonable price :D

It will be Two years on the 1st of September since I collected No 64 from SMC. I paid £5,350 for it via E.bay, I was told the reason it went to auction was they would not retail a car over 60k miles. It had done 61k.

Although they told be of on or two minor problems the one they did not tell me about I suspect was the reason it was auctioned. It is fitted with a tow bar and in cutting out the spare wheel well some strength has been lost, as a result there are two fatigue cracks in the boot floor, not a problem be there all the same.

Other than a full service, new tyres and fuel no major cost have been incurred in two years.

Other than to replace with a better example I cannot see me ever replacing it. (adding another maybe. Only another 30 years of driving it and I can match the gent who sold this one.

I would recommend keeping it.

If it helps - I paid £6950 last week for a prefacelift 04 1st regd car in standard SE form in immaculate condition with 29900 miles on the clock from a dealer with a warranty. I thought this was a reasonable deal and it will be used as an everyday car. However whilst it is immaculate and the Longbridge mechanic (who now runs an MG garage) who came with me to check the car in every aspect - thought it was well worth the money and bullet proof - it did have several owners - which yours doesn't.
