Ignition key switch - fault beep

Turning from position II to 0 (or sometimes then after removing the ignition key) frequently results in a long single beep from under the bonnet - similar sound to when you attempt to remotely lock the car with a door open. What does this mean?

Often it means that when turning the key you have inadvertently pressed either the lock or unlock button - used to drive me mad but that was all it was :)
