View Full Version : Potential Group Buy of 'New' Xpowers

ColinE

Further to other threads on the issue, here's a new thread to guage interest in a group buy of new Xpowers from Janspeed.

A number of members are expressing interest in these and the Zero's (me included) so expressing an interest is not seen as a commitment to buy, both products and prices need to be better understood first.

To keep things clear I'll maintain a saloon list and tourer list so we have requirements clear from the start. Initial discussions relate to new production run of oval X-powers.

Please either PM me or post interest and I'll maintain the list here in post #1. Please state which version you are interested in.

would like to see the price first, but i thought Tim and kevin at zero's was producing new ovals and i bet the quality of the zero's is better than janspeeds. Having had zero's and knowing the quality, although the x powers can be polished up nice, they don't feel as well made

SH4RKY

True. Only issues I have with zeroes are the price. If there is a chance of getting some xpowers at a decent price, then im interested.

As per my post #48 in other thread :-

Also, Janspeed being Janspeed, might easily do either single large oval or twin round tail pipes ? (As they do, or used to do, for the ZR box, I have one Oval and two twin round.)

If the price is sensible then I'm in for a set.

(Tim, might need to start a new thread ?)

So dependant on price and Tailpipe options I'm ready to go and collect a set of Tourers, so please add me to the list !!

As Peter has said Zero's clean up nice and are great for the Polishers. The Drivers choice, however, must be the Xpowers. Thanks BaldyBloke, the memory of you leaving the Bulls Head lives on, and Stu on Test Hill......

Dependant upon price and quality, I could be interested.

Pity I couldn't get my hands on an X-power, else I would have asked the chap who made my silencers if he could manufacture a silencer that reproduces the X-power's sound, but utilising better materials.

OK well I count 17 people so far.

I am awaiting a reply from my detailed email and conversation with Janspeed.

If we get 20 its certainly a decent sized order, and I am hoping that we will get a really good price, at LEAST a fair bit cheaper than the X-Power price, since they were tacking on their margin anyway...

Watch this space... I will update as soon as I hear back.

ColinE
12-05-2010, 04:09 PM
Just to clarify T16, this is a list of 17 people who have expressed an interest it is not an order. Most are waiting to see what the price is and how this compares to the new solution being proposed by Zero exhausts.

Not trying to teach you how to suck eggs but need to be 100% clear on this when talking to Janspeed, I am sure Tim will update on the latest status of the Zero discussions shortly

Obviously...., im not stupid!

You know what I mean. We need numbers first, which I stated as 20 pairs of exhausts, so lets see what deal they can do us based on that qty.

As long as we get definite pricing, we can turn it into a proper group buy should we wish to proceed.

More exhausts = cheaper price for everyone, hence the need to establish what sort of interest this may generate.

I don't think the implication was that you are stupid Ross just clarifying the details. It's not a small amount of money all said and done.

Be interesting to see how this develops, hopefully get Kevin to pull his finger out. :)

I wonder if they would do a straight through exhaust, to save having to sleeve them?? :)

I would be tempted to get prices for quantities of 5, 10 and 20 myself.

No implication of stupidity intended

I've had to deal with the aftermath of purchase orders not meeting forecast volumes for special manufacture products before and the individual doing the forecasting to the manufacturer was held financially responsible.

I'll say no more and just keep your list updated for you

Well spotted Tony, BX05DVG was the factory reg for ZR-X prior to my putting MG03ZRX on. Interestingly the reg shown in the Autoexpress article was something they did, and was never on the car ! See a little more at www.mgzrx.com (http://www.mgzrx.com)

Returning to "on Topic" If we can get Janspeed Xpowers with twin pipes either side then I'll be taking my Zero's off PDQ.

Hi

Is there any update on this? After hearing XPowers in the flesh a couple of times, I've decided to replace my standard exhausts.

Also, how does the news that XPart are going to be making the exhausts again (Scooter's post (https://www.two-sixties.co.uk/mgoc260/html/f0rum/showthread.php?t=6856)) affect this initiative?

NO sorry I'm not volunteering to do anything - I have just done my bit with the handbrake cables - but I recall being in touch with a company in the Bristol area who build specialised stainless steel exhausts. If I remember correctly a fellow member had had replica Zero units made for around £300 the pair and seemed well pleased. I enquired mid-last year and the price was then £350 but that was based upon just one enquiry - perhaps it's worth looking in to?

SteveW
09-01-2011, 06:32 PM
Finding somewhere that could make some is not the difficult part. I've no doubt the company I used to have mine made could do it (FWIW mine were £300 a pair fully fitted).

The problem is to reproduce the X-Powers closely requires an example to copy. This process could entail cutting one open.
Unfortunately due the rarity and value unless an odd cheap X-power can be located to use for reverse engineering, I cant see any progress being made in this direction :(

The best option is probably trying to convince the original manufacturer there is great enough demand for them to make a batch, or at least getting them to quote for a batch of 10 pairs say, and then find a way of raising funds to get them manufactured.

Wonder what a 260 on Cherry Bombs sounds like?

I have been considering testing that out, as the place that made my silencers also happens to sell them.

Hi, just out of interest I have just got a quote from a company in the Midlands and they have provided a price of £179 per box inc VAT made whilst you wait. They look like top quality S/S units and you can select the amoint of noise you want and they have software which will give you some idea before you commit yourself. Loads of choices on tail pipe configurations as well.

Regarding X Powers, I am sure anyone can make similar exhausts in fact exhausts that nobody would be able to tell the difference, but surely the value in the X Powers is that they are original MG ones no matter how silly that may be?

A bit like an antique book, first versions sell for silly money yet you can still get the book for £2 from smiths!

Not that I am biased at all...

I have experienced X Powers on 455, standard silencers on 288 and these custom made tail pipes on 700 (but I don't know where they were made) and the latter is so far my favourite - a really nice sound, but not too noisy. :)

Perhaps I need to re-evaluate the X Powers with the famous sleeves. :D

Yup had mine fitted for almost 2 years now! Powerflows are all custom made so they will never really sound the same! And now I am not unique with my tail pipes so maybe time for a change? They do suit the 260 though so good choice :D

I had mine done by the Powerflow specialist here in Crewe but going to go down to a place in the Midlands that was posted in another thread on here and see what they can do! been thinking of the twin pipes down the car again...

I only have experience of the standard exhaust and the X-Powers I now have fitted,

But there is something about them, not subtle at all but somehow not silly loud either.

My Aussie Friend was introduced to the ZT yesterday for the first time in the garage.

I said to him, he is probably missing a V8 sound, so fired up 'Enola' in the garage blipped the throttle to hear the pop and crackle etc.

He just stood in amazement and said, 'Thats old school mate!'

Think he liked it :D
