Unfortunately my left backbox has disintegrated - the pipe facing the front of the car has rusted through.

Not unexpected after 235'000 km and 18 years I suppose, but I badly need a replacement for both sides soon.

I replaced the broken one with one of the pristine X-power backboxes I have - lovely sound but too much resonance around 1'800 - 2'200 rpm for long-distance cruising, and I use my car for long drives a lot.

Does anyone have some standard ones in good condition?

I have a trip to Chichester (W Sussex) planned in mid-October so I could collect if you're not too far from that area. Otherwise I'd pay for courier and packing.

You could try John Wilcox. He had some sets about 2020. I got a set for a saloon.

Update: I had a new pipe soldered in and it seems to be fine, for the reasonable equivalent of EUR 300. The rest of the silencer is in good shape, apparently.

Now I'm looking for the section of pipe that runs between the catalysts and the backboxes (see attached diagram, number 2). Rimmer's website doesn't even have a part number so any kind of research is difficult. Is there a place I can find the part number for this?

The piece of pipe you are after is made up of two pieces, the piece that is y shaped is one and the piece that goes over the axle is another. The latter piece does come up on Ebay sometimes but I have not seem the y piece ever listed. This piece could probably me made up by an exhaust specalist but the piece over the rear axle would have to be made very accuratly.
This is the ROVER 75 version https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184539769413?hash=item2af76d6a45:g:WNMAAOSw8gVYBHw 2&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoC57eW%2BtIzSieGGSbadLyXTHNnN ucA7j7gD%2BohxCE%2BQ4g0Zgaisd9eTx5hctfQhzczSL3X2K2 IGTs%2BPuk7X8jgNU8ckVbWxxIWWNpN0ZTXvJdcNFbnUkRenTz I0q22DpYZUlKU5hvftSaOoiDAvQelv9DH6TZ9ljA0qeab%2FpW p6J6BuyPpC6GDfeieXIvJUwhkn4wm4TXkvwyYeCQpdpiDg%3D% 7Ctkp%3ABk9SR4iWtY2MYQ I suppose this could be used on a ZTT as is or modified by removing the silencer.

If you are talking about the over-axle y-piece, then this is it and its number is WCE000711. When they were available from Rimmer's, the Rimmer's diagram cross referenced the mid-section and the over axle section causing some confusion!

... but I think they have bee NLA for over 3 years. There was once a discussion here about having some made up but i think it came to naught, see: https://www.two-sixties.co.uk/mgoc260/html/f0rum/showthread.php?17249-Possible-exhaust-supplier (https://www.two-sixties.co.uk/mgoc260/html/f0rum/showthread.php?17249-Possible-exhaust-supplier&highlight=axle)

Thanks for that David and Steve (and for your replies on the Facebook forum).
It seems the only options are to wait for the item to turn up on ebay, if the thing doesn't crumble into rust before, or have it manufactured.

I suggested a group order since there is obviously some demand from a number of owners. The question remains, what supplier to choose from? The name PowerFlow came up on the forum, no doubt there are others.

For those of us on the Continent there may be additional options. Nicolas Barat suggested a French supplier located in Moselle, in Northern France:

There are several manufacturers of custom stainless steel exhausts in France, of course some might have a better reputation than others, it's also a route I'm investigating as I need to replace both of my backboxes. The left one has developed a leak around the welding points to the entry pipe, and the internals are rattling. The right one is fine but would need replacing too if I want to have matching sound and looks.
The rest of my pipes are fine even though they have some surface rust but nothing out of the ordinary for an 18-year-old car...

Sorry to go off track, but are the back boxes available for the saloon ? ... You would be very lucky to find new or NOS any more, I think. eBay is probably your best bet. 5 minutes searching found these used saloon ones:

... and these too, from Best of British Rover. Read the full description. They are new but would need some modification to fit:

... but these could be a cheaper solution :D

The stainless steel used for the backboxes is of a mixed quality. The silencer and rear pipes are generally good, the front-facing pipe is the one that rots away.
Consider having just the front-facing pipe fixed if the rest is OK. Usually the left one is worst.

Ian, you have a PM. No standard boxes however!
