I am soon to be the proud owner of a mk1 MG ZT 260 (can't wait) - and look forward to attending some events

I usually remove the front bumper as it is a bit fiddly and you really don't want to break anything

I usually remove the front bumper as it is a bit fiddly and you really don't want to break anything Just make sure you've got someone to help you and make sure the lower front wing corners are protected with cardboard or some-such. Take a look here:

... which should help. You CAN do the filter without taking the bumper off, but I think it is more difficult, unless you have the car up on ramps, maybe. You have to learn how to do it sooner or later anyway !
Tip 1. An old garden chair/lounger cushion is ideal to use to lay the bumper on, since they are about 5 foot long and nicely padded. The bumper will tend to rotate as you pull it forwards and off, so have it in place ready. (Don't use a new cushion; grounds for divorce).
Tip 2. You don't have to disconnect the wiring loom connector (which can be tricky); just swivel the bumper unit to the side on its garden-chair / lounger cushion.
