Possible new 260 owner. Advice needed please.

Hi. I'm considering buying an 04 260se. I have a ZT CDTI, that I have owned for the past 7 years, and still love it! Apart from a new clutch, alternator, and normal service items, it's pretty much original, with 150k on the clock now.

I'm very handy with the spanners, and had a really good quote from Adrian Flux, which is encouraging! The 260 I have in mind has 65k on the clock, and is pretty much mint!

My 260 questions are:

Are the clutch hydraulics better than the CDTI?

I'm considering an LPG conversion, any advice?. Been quoted £1670.

Front struts, what if they need replacing?

Rear discs, do they last? On third set on the CDTI.

Anything to look-out for on the transnission?

Can you obtain a disc for the SatNav?

Hi Paul,

If you let us know what car you are looking at then we may have some history on it. If you put your location in your profile then it sometimes helps to put you in touch with others in your area who may be able to offer advice etc.

I can't comment on a comparison between clutches because I have never experienced a CDTI clutch but the 260 is a reliable system.

LPG conversions are doable. Price sounds quite good but some LPG experts on here will be able to advise you.

Front struts can be refurbished.

Rear discs do last but are available from the club shop if needed.

Tremec gearbox is very robust, a bit slow when cold but solid.

Depends on which version of SatNav drive you have, CD or DVD but update discs are available.

Have you found a copy of the Buyers Guide yet?

Hi and welcome from another 260 and ZT cdti owners

clutch is much more reliable onnthe 260. My cdti clutch is heavier to operate than the 260

front struts are replaceable but scarce so not cheap

rear discs available much cheaper from the forum shop

satnav discs are obtainable

bernardlpg is one of the best people to speak to on here about lpg260

peter best is good for insurance

Good questions, seems you have done your homework!

As above I believe the clutch itself is exceptionally strong but if the slave goes it is an engine out job (however this is fairly rare)?

I would look very carefully at the front struts, especially where the spring sits as they are prone to rusting an are quite scarce now

Some people report the rear discs actually wear faster than the fronts, and they're not cheap so worth checking there's not too much of a lip worn on them

The gearbox is strong, the car was built to handle 400hp yet only got 260 so no worries there

Clutch hydraulics are fairly robust but if the slave goes it's engine out

Seems cheap for a V8 conversion but contact BernardLPG as he's the resident expert on here

Rare to get hold of new but Billstein does offer a refurbish service


Rear discs, do they last? On third set on the CDTI.

Mine lasted 90K or so and the shop has them available to order


Anything to look-out for on the transnission?

Nothing special, but of a agricultural box but solid enough. Just avoid swift/harsh changes as the forks don't like that


Can you obtain a disc for the SatNav?

Whether CD or DVD, yes you can.
