Good evening all how you all doing, hope all is well.
Hope the cars are running great.

Right Ok Its time to explain a few things regarding a secret project I have in mind, Not everyone is going to agree with this I know that, But its something I've always wanted to do and I found the perfect car to do it in, this is where the hybrid comes in.

Right first to be blunt MOTORSPORT.

Circuit racing for diesel cars.

I've always wanted to enter a motorsport event and in July will be my first one, It all depends if I can get everything ready in time.
That's why I've been looking for new work to try and find a better income, plus its every week rather then stop and start. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/wallhead.gif
As we all know that motorsport is expensive and I'll be honest it will put the car in harms way. I hope nothing happens, but in life there are no guaranties.
I like to get it done before July if not no matter how long it takes I'll do it, trust me when I say I will I will. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

For last few days I've been speaking to drivers and tuning shops around the UK and Wales, Driver's which I know and classic car fans, plus my friends have pointed me to the right places, which has been great and there input very important. 2nd tuning shops, This is where it gets interesting,
On a diesel engine we all know that air is the most important part of the combustion of the engine, what do we need MORE AIR, The turbo charger in our cars is very reliable and doesn't suffer breakdowns has much as the BMW Variable Vane turbo. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/eusa_boohoo.gif

But its not enough, its small and compressor wheel is just not big enough to draw masses of volume of air into the engine, it needs to be a little bigger and that's it, I Don't want to go stupid i just want a little faster not 100 bhp 200bhp but just 50 bhp will do me nicely. I'm after acceleration not top end speed. As the track I'm going to be racing as plenty of tight bends and turns, so top end speed it pretty useless.

But If can get the balance of both even better.

I've spoken to this a firm a lot regarding fuel injectors, rails, pumps and so on to try and get what I need out of the engine. The M47R is really good engine and like working on the damn thing, I don't want to push the engine too much to the point where the engine has to be rebuilt from scratch, if you catch my drift.http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-in ... -upgrades/ (http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-injector-power-upgrades/)

I've spoken to Kieth a lot regarding this and may have a hybrid turbo for the this car, its bigger then a stranded one, but still have plenty of room to be fitted, in other words its not silly, but does produce a bit more power and if tuned the right way, the turbo it will kick as soon as i need it.
I've messaged him back and said, once all the funds are in order then I can go for it.
The injectors can be upgraded as our's are Bosch, there are performance injectors for the M47 including the injector pump.
I've gave him my numbers off the turbo and manifold, so he knows exactly what the performance are of the turbo and manifold.

If I play well and I can get away with keeping a lot of the engine standerd.

But it isn't just performance parts but lot of other bits as well,
Such as

Braking system's
Uprated discs and pads all round
Brake pipes will need to be done as well

Suspension
Coil overs
Strunt mounts
dampers all up rated.
Polly bushes can't forget those.

Transmission
Up-rated clutch
up-rated Flywheel, Single mass

Fuel and Air
Inlet maniflod will be custom made in stainless steel.
A ram air system
Hybrid turbo.
Upgraded injectors.
Intercooler already uprated, needs re-positioning to allow more air flow.
Fuel injector pump upgrade.
Possible a bonnet scoop at the back of the engine to cool turbo charger down, but will find out later on in the future.

Safety
Helmet and fire resistant overalls
Fire extinguisher
Roll cage that can be unbolted to allowe rear seats to be refittted after the race is over and turn it back to a road car.
bucket seat and 4 or 6 point harness

So far that's my list and will most liking be updated once again.

I'm willing to do this and yes I bloody NUTS and that will always be me. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Can do it?

YES I CAN AND THIS ENGINE HAS REALLY PROVEN IT CAN TAKE IT. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/steer.gifhttp://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/steer.gifhttp://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_cool.gifhttp://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif

Again like at the start of the topic, its not everyone's idea, but if you have your oppnins please let me hear'em. Or if you can advice me as this is my first major project.

Thank you all for reading and I will be doing a complete write up on all what's going on.

Its also being booked for a dyno run in Flintshire next week, I'll find out the date pretty soon and this will give me an idea what the engine is currently doing. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

The combustion material is too heavy, you need to increase the calorific value and size of engine by four cylinders. :)

Be interesting to see how it goes as some members also have diesels.

Hiya all hope you don't mind but I've copied the convo regarding this from the enthusiast site, Carl and Tom made have made me think very hard about this, thge crankshaft is the main coucern, also mtorsport insuance and other things.

That's some really good info here, yes I will be getting a 2nd car other Rover Or ZT and yes it will be a diesel engine. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

The crankshaft I didn't think of that, I thought the crankshaft could as a diesel engine parts are stronger to cope with a higher compression ratio.
I'll need to learn more abut the heart of the engine.
What I'll do if I find a crankshaft on ebay and get the numbers from that, I can send it to Keith and he'll give me the info on what the Crank is cable of withstanding. I'll post this information here. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Carl and Tom your input has really been helpful and thank you.

How you doing dave, we weren't able to race the Escort MK2 in the end, due to doors needed replacing, we did get a few tip off, but it tunred out that the doors has sufferd the same fate. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

We had decline, but we still went up to watch, there was one car that stood from the rest and did really.
What was the do you ask.
It was a Rover
7
5
Very modified and it was a KV6 engine.

That's when I started thinking, what If I tuned my diesel engine?

What would I get and how would it do compare to other diesel engine cars.
Well that depends on experience of the driver, which he has none, only done a few track days on the 25 a few years ago In Angelsey, which I'm only 14 miles away from the track.

But Thank you all I'll take this really seriously and I;ll have more information in the near future. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

How you doing Colin, Its a race event for diesel powerd cars and tuning enthusiasts, at the same time its also good for people who looking for drivers on the track.

This will give me some experience on the track, plus an idea on what I need out car as well.

I lack experience this is my first major project.

if all goes well with funding and buying parts, she should be ready. :)
If not then there's always next year. :)

Trying to find parts this is going to be a lot tougher then I thought,

This is what I'm going to do first

1 Braking systems, no point having a fast car when the brakes are dinosaur era.
2 Suspension for better handling.
3 Gearbox and clutch system, give me the grunt I need to pull in every gear.
4 Tyres, I've bought my ZT alloys which are being hydo dipped, Tyres are going to be Bridgestone very good.
5 safety equipment, things you need on the track and for car safety for driver and passenger.
6 Weight reduction, remove trim that slows the car down and fit it to either other 75 or ZT, If do get other the same space spec like my Rover then the trim can be slod to members.
7 Last and not least engine performance upgrades. Upgrades that will allow more fuel and air into the engine, plus cooling upagrdes and other major parts, LIKE THE CRANKSHAFT.

I need to ask a question, has anyone here doing tuning to any motorsport vehicles, I don't mean the V8 but any diesel car?

Also regarding parts where the best places to go?

I've sorted out the hybrid turbo and manifold, injectors and injector pump.
But otherwise nothing else. :(

Lord Hybrid
02-02-2015, 06:38 PM
Just got an email off Kieth and this is what he said.

Hi David,

Some facts about your turbo,

A compressor wheel mod will be about £ 450.00 to £ 650.00 and an extra £ 150.00 for a billet wheel mod, this makes the turbo spin easier.
To enlarge the exhaust side as well will be an full cost of about £ 770.00 but enlarging the exhaust you will have a slower spool up.

A compressor wheel mod will give you about 30 Bhp more
A full mod will give you about 60 Bhp more

I personally think that the way to go will be the compressor mod with uprated injectors and a remap. I would estimate that the total cost will be
about £ 1200.00 to £ 1500.00.
I would need the vehicle for about a week.

Have a think about it and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Regards,
Keith

Think I might have to give dreadnought garage a call, can't seem to find any uprated gearboxes for our cars.

There some for the KV6 1.8 k-series and the V8, otherwise can't seem to find one for the CDTI model, unless I look at the BMW side of things.

Regards to suspension, does anyone have recommendations on where to shop for them.?

What am trying to do is calumniate how much I need save for that target.
Then work out my bills and also how much I earn in a week and convert it to a monthly thing. http://forums.75-zt.com/images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Why not instead of phoning people and asking them to check this and that, which I've had experience of in my job as a parts man and believe me if you're busy there's nothing more annoying get all your finances sorted out and then do what you're planning. To be honest if you don't have the funds in place to carry out what you're planing which is going to be a horrendous cost it'll be much more by the time you have the funds and you'll be asking the same questions to suppliers all over again

I can see your point to be honest.

Think what I'll do is wait and bide my time.
Once I have a certain amount, then get the parts bit by bit.

It will take a while, but a slow progress is better then no progress at all.

I think the cost of this project could get to be very high. The main problem is the cost of unique parts which will add up very quickly, to build a ZR190 race car is about £15,000 in parts alone and they are all off the shelf. Our ZT520 dampers cost £6000 its always better to buy a car that has already been built.

The rover 75 is to heavy and the bmw lump is not that good or easy to tune. I have a mg zs180 which is slowly being tweaked and added to on track days - I have fun and it's not that embarrassing. I met the mg cockshoot race cars at donington last July and the knowledge and help was superb and what it came across to me was just spend a little to start as your going to write it off as your experience is low. Then just buy other people's racers cars as they move up through the ranks it's the most cost effective route - the mg race series has excellent races for the Zr and zs plus mgf where you can tune the old l series lump cheaply and put on the slip dif from the brm or 620ti and its a pocket rocket. So moral of story just get racing and not get bogged down in car specs and parts - enjoy Alan

Well I've decided and made up my mind.

I've spoken to a friend on the phone that does a lot with Motorsport in Angelsey.
It was a long chat and I'll get straight to the point.

Asks me to go outside and look at my car, thinking to myself what is he on about, again he said the same thing.
Well I did go out side as he said and he asked to look at the car and look all around it, interior engine everything.

To start off with I didn't quite get what he ment, but I relised after what he was trying to do.
He wanted me to look at it and think, do i really want to race my OWN car.
The work I've done the parts I've replaced.

The graphics that make the car mine sort of thing, plus can't forget walnut trim and steering wheel.
No i couldn't, its my car and I wouldn't want it to be damaged or scrapped.

I still want to give it a shot, but I'll buy other CDTI for cheap as chips, that's failed an MOT then use that one.
If I can't make it in July, well there's always next year. :)

I think you would be much much much better off buying a car already prepared for racing.
the MGCC Trophy series for example has classes including virtually road standard spec. What is your race experience?? Do you already have a licence?? What is your track experience??

It's a dangerous place to be when starting out with no experience, for you, but more so for all the others out on track. Maybe a good idea to do some MGs On Track track days with a proper instructor if you haven't already done so.

why not come up to MG Live in June at Silvestone, it's the MGCC annual event, and it's a race weekend, with many ZRs and some ZS competing in different race category's. Have a chat with some of the race guys and girls (but not just before or after practice / qualy / race/ scrutineering etc. I am sure that they will have time for you. Use it as an information gathering and learning excercise. Several from MGCC racing have gone on to bigger race series ( read much bigger budgets) including BTCC http://www.mgcc.co.uk/trophy/ex-trophy-stars/

Start small all and slowly and grow as your ability and budget allows

just my advice, as a frustrated racer myself (lacking both talent and budget) so I have marshalled and now photograph it instead (for MG Motor UK, MGCC and TSCC)

even just oust marshalling you will be in a position to learn a lot

Food for thought here

Class D is for race prepared ZR 160 road cars that can be built for around £3,000, possibly the cheapest entry level tin top able to race on all the UK’s top circuits.

Do you know what your right very right and the 260 members as well.

The only experience I have is driving a Rover 25 on the track which I did do a lot of work on.
Did about 3 track days, nothing competitive and did have sought of a lesson, when Brain was still around with his Jag XJ6.
That's really and I don't have a racing licences at all.

I'd like to race in an MG brand car, or a Ford split loyalty's there. :car

The link looks really cool, Didn't know they did that. :)

Sounds like something I can focus on. :)

Regards to marshalling how do Get into that. ?

Ref the Marshalling, where is you local circuit or even hill climb location?
Are you prepared to travel? I believe the MGCC has some of its own marshals that travel to the MGCC races
have a look on the circuit websites, there's often a marshals link and I am sure that Marshalls are never turned away.

afterall, no Marshalls = No Motorsport event.

mate of mine and his wife are Marshalls at Castle Combe, and I believe as you gain experience you get the opportunity to Marshall at bigger and bigger events. As a result they have done F1, BTCC and ihre Indy500

igs all there for the doing

I never went on a course myself, I suspect existing Marshalls will train you, unless you start going down the registered route and then I don't know. I guess it's in one of the links somewhere.

i know the castle combe Marshalls had to buy their own orange Marshalls overalls though :(

I get you. :)

I've had to buy own security equipment and coats as well. You'd think when you work for them they'd cover that sort of thing. :(

But thanks again for your help. :)

Really appreciate this :)
