View Full Version : Struggling to find NON SE 260

George
30-09-2013, 11:18 AM
Hi all! So I've finally decided the 260 is the car for me, inoffensive to most but cool to a few in the know.

I've been browsing this and the MG forums for the past few weeks and I like the community here, for me vehicle ownership is as much getting to know a car mechanically as it is driving it, and the depth and breadth of knowledge members have is outstanding, seems like everyone pulls together to solve problems.

Anyway onto the subject of my post... I'm not the biggest fan of gadgets so I would really like a non SE 260 (saloon), in fact ideally I would like a MK1 without traction control and I'm keen to avoid a sunroof. Problem is I've gone through the for sale post and it seems like almost all of the cars are SE's, and those that aren't have sunroofs and satnavs as options. So my question is am I going to be waiting a long time for what I want to come up, does anyone have a rough idea of how many SE's vs standard models were originally produced? Finally if I have to get an SE can the extras be removed? From what I read the wiring looms are the same and the electronics plug in so I could perhaps substitute parts for base model Rover 75 items? Can the traction control be unplugged too?

I realise this sounds a bit strange, I mean, who'd choose a lower spec car when the price is the same? I just like basic motoring - no radio, window down instead of air con.

Many thanks, George

You are right Colin, patience is key here best to wait and get the right one. If they are out there then I'll sit tight and keep my eyes open

Hi George,

I don't really have any quick fix answers, I'm replying mainly because you are clearly a man after my own heart.

I looked hard & long for a non SE, mainly due to my distaste for sat nav & apex alloys (these are generally admired additions!).

I finally found mine - a one owner, non Sat Nav example with barely 12,000 miles on the clock (now 14,000). This in fact turned out to be an SE originally built for South African import, but never actually got past a dealer in Oldham. Go figure.....

You've probably already seen the below in Autotrader, it's been around for about 4 months now... mileage & location would put me off but at least they still exist...
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201305246943787/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/model/zt/make/mg/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/1500/postcode/de110la/page/1/quicksearch/true?logcode=p

You may have to settle for a nice SE though, just keep the fiddle fingers off those sad electro gadgets.....

happy hunting & regards.....

Thanks Ian, glad to hear I'm not alone here! Yes I'd seen #220 and I was considering it but under close inspection it appears to have a sunroof (the only extra I can't remove), think I'll wait a couple of months to see if the perfect car turns up. Sure you don't want to sell yours? I could find you a top spec electric everything model to go in its place, soon you wouldn't be able to live without an an automatically dimming rear view mirror!

To true. I have a SE.

Sat nav bust, of course TV won't work nowadays anyway as its analog.
CD player broke.
Sun roof broke
Central locking partially broke.
Reversing sensors dicky.
Heating broke - now operated manually by setting the valve under the bonnet to hot and cold for winter/summer.

Leather is nice though. Wouldn't want non leather car personally.

Corin on the OC has done a couple of factory sunroof, so I'm sure he could do the reverse !!!

What is the difference in weight between a SE and non-SE ZT 260?
I presume the non-SE would be lighter ?

Unladen weight

ZT. 1,680 - 1,770 kg

ZTT. 1,740 - 1,835

I guess the first figure is the non SE?

I've read somewhere on the forums the SE is 100kg heavier which I can believe, I bet the electric seats, rear electric windows and sunroof account for a lot of that. That's 4 bags of cement to lug around all the while! As VXman said for starters the tv won't work and I just prefer having less to go wrong in the first place

I wonder how many don't have a sunroof?

My old car was a non SE but was fitted with a sunroof, might be a long search.

It is not impossible to remove the sun roof.
I have seen it done on an MGBGT where they removed the sun roof and a panel welded in. When finished and the roof upholstery was done, you would not have known it ever had sun roof.

Was a sun roof a factory option on an BGT ?

Hi George,

I am about to sell my 260 and if you're interested, it ticks most of your boxes. Basic car details as follows,

ZT 260 X-Power grey, Reg Sept 2004.
Apex alloys, Bridgestone Potenza tyres.
FSH Mot to 27/09/14.
6 months tax.
VIN No 689.
Price £5750.

I bought the car new from Phoenix Coventry and, like you, wanted my V8 without traction control. Phoenix seemed puzzled at this stipulation but I told them I would not buy the car if it had traction control. I'm so glad I insisted as the car drives and handles like a dream and behaves beautifully. The car is basic inside- no sunroof, no satnav, wind up rear windows and a Kenwood radio/cd player. With the chrome touches and lack of clutter, the cabin is stylish and retro-just how I like it. It does have air-con, but more often than not, I drive with this switched off and the windows open. I get to hear more of the engine that way. As you know, such a basic model is a rare beast and I believe the combination of no traction control, lack of options but with Apex alloys makes my motor unique! It looks stunning and if the look fails to turn heads, the rumble of the V8 doesn't!

We have looked after the car really well over the nine years, especially the bodywork. The oil has been changed religiously every 5000 miles and the majority of the cars miles have come from distance or motorway driving. Highlights include a trip to Biarritz (the French loved the 260) and the Scottish Highlands (driving my car through mountains was very special) I had a water pump in the air con system replaced a couple of years ago and the brake discs replaced, but other than that, the car has been very reliable. It sailed straight through it's MOT two weeks ago and is set up for the next year.

So why am I selling this machine? Family circumstances have changed and I'd be happy to talk you through this if you wish, but suffice to say, I am selling it with a heavy heart! My intention is to take some photos of the car over the weekend and to advertise it on this site and Auto Trader early next week. If you are interested in the car and want to see it, etc, I would be prepared to hold fire for a few days as you sound like the kind of guy who would really appreciate my 260. My email address is; billkelly399@live.co.uk. My mobile number is deleted by Herman if you want to ask any questions about the car. I live between Leicester and Coventry just off the M69 so convenient for motorway network. If I don't hear from you over the next couple of days, I'll proceed with the adverts.

Regards,

Bill

Thanks for the welcome.
My car's mileage is 71700. I'll post some photos over the weekend when I've had a tutorial from one of my sons.
I came across Two Sixties on a link to the video featuring the Zeros exhaust system. Wish I'd joined years ago as it's good to link up with kindred spirits.

Just been to look at Bill's car, what a nice bloke and so sorry to hear about the reasons for sale. I get the feeling the whole family loves it! I can't believe it turned up just a few days after my post, it's a mk2 with the traction control left off by the factory on Bill's request so it's quite unique. Now I don't believe in fate but the complete lack of gadgets coupled with the fact it's so close to me... So yes it's sold, I hope to collect it on Thursday and cautiously start getting to know what a 4.6l rear wheel drive car is like!

Just a matter of hours now before I collect the car... I'm hoping the joy will banish the pain of insurance. 30 years old, licence since 18 but because I mostly ride motorbikes, ouch! I would have thought if I haven't made a claim on those death traps I must be doing something right

Just got back, thanks very much Bill pleasure doing business with such a genuine chap. First impressions are good I think I'll grow very fond of this car. I was apprehensive on the way over because after all this dry weather it's sod's law how the roads were wet, but I needn't have worried - it's not one of those cars that only operates at ten tenths and it was quite happy just burbling along helping me relax, I didn't have to go over 2000rpm on the journey back.

More pics and info when I've got some time in a day or two but here it is on the drive, the glare is my dad's car on the long exposure photo

The ride and handling is a lot sharper than what I'm used to with the stiff suspension and low profile tyres. Have to see how I get used to it but I notice the 75 version had 17" wheels so maybe they would be a bit more pliant (I'm really not a fast driver)?
